Installation of Arc Fault Breakers Is Mandatory in New Construction
For your home to be properly protected from the threat of electrical fire, an arc fault breaker needs to be installed. These breakers are mandatory in the bedrooms of all new construction as they have become part of the electrical wiring model code. This means any new home built without arc fault breakers is in violation of this code and will not pass inspection. Older homes are exempt from this rule but would benefit from the addition of arc fault breakers. This would help protect an older home with aging wiring from fire. Arc fault breakers must be installed by a professional electrician. They can be installed in a regular breaker panel but have to be tested on regular basis to assure they are working. If the breaker doesn’t trip, this is a sign it is not working and needs to be replaced.
