     To Make A Difference

A young man ran along a beach at dawn picking up stranded starfish and throwing them out to sea to keep them from dying in the morning sun. An older man was amazed by his efforts and asked why he spent so much energy doing what seemed a waste of time.

"There must be thousands of miles of beach," he said, "and millions of starfish. How can your efforts make any difference?" The young man looked down at the small starfish in his hand and as he threw it to safety far out in the sea replied, "It makes a difference to this one."

     History

The Coalition began in 1985 as a result of a group of concerned citizens responding to families living in their cars or the state forest. The group raised support and opened the first shelter in a rented farmhouse in Halifax in May of 1987. A generous donation of land, building services and materials enabled the Coalition to custom build a facility in Kingston to accommodate ten families at a time for shelter. This facility also includes an office, child care room, food pantry, Santa's Workshop and the F.A.I.R. Program.
